Gros Piton Nature Trail
The iconic Gros Piton, part of Saint Lucia’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site offers an abundance of natural wonders for everyone. Rising nearly 3000 feet out of the sea, Gros piton represents a dominant landmass from the west coast of the island. You will be spoiled for choice and overwhelmed by the lush environment teeming with unique plants and animals including unusual species of birds. From the highest tree canopies to the mysterious caves and rock shelters, you will be deeply satisfied with all the rare natural wonders there are to discover. Go back in time and walk in the footsteps of our first peoples, the Amerindians, who revered the sacred peaks. Then, see the secret havens of runaway slaves in the Valley of The Free People, as well as the old pirate hideaways during the adventurous days of brigands on the high seas. Whether you are a beginner or experienced hiker, you will find the tour of the Gros Piton a rewarding trail. The first half of the nature trail from Fond Gen Libre is an easy hike, while the second half is more challenging with a steep ascent to the summit of Gros Piton. There is never a dull moment on your trek and it will be hard not to stop and wonder at the sights all around you. When you get to the summit, your feelings of accomplishment and exhilaration are only enhanced by a spectacular view of St. Vincent to the South and Martinique to the North. |
MUD BATH EXPERIENCE
Most people can’t say that they drove into the crater of a volcano, coated themselves in mud, soaked in natural hot springs then rinsed off under a cascading waterfall all in a single day…unless, of course, they’ve been to Sulphur Springs, St Lucia. Bathing in these therapeutic waters is one of the best things to do in Saint Lucia, not only for the relaxation and health benefits but because, c’mon, where else can you literally drive into a volcano?! Here’s everything you need to know about visiting the St Lucia volcano, mud bath and sulphur springs. History of the Soufriere volcano and Sulphur Springs, St LuciaThe Soufriere drive-in volcano is found on the west coast of St. Lucia, near the famous twin peaks of the Pitons, the historic town of Soufriere and some of the country’s most exclusive resorts. The volcano last erupted in the 1700s, and is the youngest and only ‘live’ (likely to erupt again) volcanic centre in the island. The Soufrière Volcanic Centre is located near the town to monitor it, and today visitors to the site can still see wisps of vapour rising up and smell the thick scent of sulphur. |

ST LUCIA CREOLE FESTIVALIt goes without saying that Saint Lucia is a country not short of outstanding beauty and unique heritage. A former British colony that was in fact also a French colony before becoming independent from Britain in 1967. The control of St. Lucia could almost be said to be part of a tug and war match between the French and the British, as control of St. Lucia switched between the two countries fourteen times, seven times for the French and Seven times for the British. As a result of this St. Lucia is now a country of mixed culture, French, British, African and Caribbean. The traditions of each of these countries are now celebrated each year in the month of October as part of Creole Heritage Month. Creole Day in St Lucia is celebrated on the last Sunday of October. It is a holiday loved by just about everyone that lives on the Island of Saint Lucia.
